Saltfish & Green Plantain is a traditional Jamaican dish with a Spanish influence, combining the flavors of salted fish with the sweetness of ripe plantains. This Jamaican style dish is typically prepared with salt cod, green plantains, scotch bonnet pepper, garlic and onions. Saltfish & Green Plantain is the perfect recipe for when you are looking for perfect dish with a savory flavor.

How To Cook Saltfish?

Saltfish is a popular dish in many parts of the world, but it is most well-known in Latin America and the Caribbean. You can find it served as a main dish or as a side dish. When buying saltfish, make sure to choose a white looking fish to ensure a fresh and high quality product. Once you have the saltfish, you can cook it in a few different ways. You can grill, fry, or boil saltfish. If you boil it, make sure you add a lot of water to the pot because it can get pretty salty. Some people even add a bit of vinegar to help it taste better.

Saltfish is a staple in many Caribbean and African countries. It is not a particularly difficult recipe to make, but does require some time and preparation. It is traditionally made by soaking salted cod in water for three days and changing the water 4 times. You can also purchase saltfish from the store. In either case, soak the saltfish in water for 12-24 hours before cooking.

What To Serve With Saltfish & Green Plantain?

It is common for Jamaicans to have saltfish and green plantain for breakfast. This dish is a favorite among many Jamaicans because of its simplicity. Both saltfish and green plantain are ingredients that are readily available in Jamaica. It is not necessary to make a meal with these ingredients, because the saltfish already has a lot of spices in it.

With that being said, there are many dishes that can be served with saltfish and green plantains. One dish that is very popular in the Caribbean is called “bammy” which is made from cassava and has a dough-like consistency. The dish is also common among West Indian populations and is also a delicacy in Saint Vincent and the Grenadines. Which is often served with green plantain, a type of banana. Other common foods served with saltfish and green plantain are boiled dumplings, macaroni pie, coconut rice, and a side of fried plantain.

What To Do With Left Over Green Plantain?

Have you ever cooked plantain and not used it all? Plantain is a great versatile food, it can be eaten as sweet or savory. Use leftover green plantain to make a breakfast, lunch, or dinner dish. Start by making a batch of tostones, fried plantain slices. Tostones can be eaten as a side dish or as a main dish by topping them with beans and cheese.

When you’re cooking a dish that calls for plantains, don’t worry about the ones that are too brown to eat. They can be mashed up and used in other dishes! Here are some of my favorite ways to enjoy it: -Boil it, mash it up with a fork and add it to your favorite soup. -Fry it up with some onions and garlic and serve it as a side dish. -Purée it with some milk and honey and make delicious plantain breads.
